Green Butterfly Pair

the Name

The word Katallasso is a Greek word deriving from katá = an intensifier + allásso = change. In its simplest form it means to change, exchange and to reconcile (those who are at variance – differing or opposing). It refers to one returning to favour with or to receive one into favour.

Katallasso is a verb – signifying action. We at Katallasso believe that counselling and support work requires the client to be active in their self-development and implementation of changes to improve their relationships.  In classical Greek allásso was used to express changing shape, or colour, or appearance. It was also used in the sense of to exchange or to barter; and so was not infrequently used of taking one thing in exchange for another. At Katallasso we believe that relationships often require compromise and mutual exchange as we work in unity with each other.

the Butterfly

Around the world, people view the butterfly as representing rebirth, transformation, renewal, courage, endurance, change, hope, and life. We love the quote “just when the caterpillar thought life was over, she (or he) turned into a beautiful butterfly”. Sometimes life will bring its challenges and struggles, we may feel a little grounded when we really want to fly. Sometimes we may feel like hiding or retreating or even avoiding and giving up. Growth and change don’t necessarily happen immediately, sometimes there is work that we need to do. Often that work is within us or our “cocoon”. Much of that work though, when done, will strengthen us and transform us into freedom that is beautiful for us and for those around us. And let’s state the obvious – Butterflies are beautiful! In fact, their wings are made up of lots of tiny scales which are translucent and reflect the light around them. It’s all a bit ‘science-y’, but at Katallasso we like to think that it symbolises the potential and the responsibility we have to reflect light and beauty to others around us.
